St. Raphael of Brooklyn is the first Orthodox Christian Bishop consecrated in North America and is the first "North American" Bishop canonized. His life was dedicated to nourishing the young shoot of the ancient faith which immigrant Orthodox had planted in the "New World." These many parishes founded by various ethnic groups have existed on the North American continent for more than two hundred years. Saint Raphael of Brooklyn parish, although a "new" planting now becomes a part of and a participant in the two hundred year Orthodox witness in the United States.
